CHAPTER NINE

Monday dawned with a heavy cloud cover and a chance of snow. Jake's mood matched the gloomy weather. Though he was glad to finally get the cast off, it was only another step to a full recovery. He'd be in a boot for another few weeks yet. But at least he'd be able to handle more of his own chores and his friends could go back to handling their own ranches without having to take care of his.

He'd hoped to be able to rebuild his herd by now, but he wasn't buying new stock until they'd caught the cattle thieves, and at the rate he was going, his medical bills would eat up what savings he had left. And today would just add more to that stack of bills on his desk. And Christmas was coming up. He never knew what to get anyone, which annoyed him even more.

Before he could talk himself into a truly bad mood, Carol stirred beside him, snuggling her bottom against his morning erection. Now there was a bright spot amidst the gloom. She'd taken to sleeping with him as easily as she did everything else. He couldn't imagine having to sleep without her.

She stretched and yawned, then slowly turned her head to look at him over her shoulder. "Good morning," she murmured with a soft smile. "Looks like you're already awake and raring to go."

He kissed her forehead. "Yeah, but unfortunately, we don't have time. We need to be on the road in a half-hour if we're going to make it to Lubbock on time."

She squealed and tossed the covers aside. "You should have woken me up earlier."

"We'll make it. You go shower, and I'll make the coffee."

The rich aroma of his favorite brew filled the kitchen when she walked in, dressed and ready to go, fifteen minutes later. God, he loved a woman who could get ready that fast.

That thought stayed with him as he went to take his own half-shower. This would be the best part of getting the cast off. He'd be able to put his whole body under the spray and not have to mess with the plastic bag and trying to sit with one leg outside the curtain.

The earlier thought kept playing through his mind. He loved…

What did he love? The way she cooked? The way she kept his house clean? The way she was always quick to make up her mind, quick to be ready for anything? Or did he just plain love her? He wasn't sure he knew what love was. Or if there really was any such thing. He'd believed it was only something you'd find in a romance novel until Logan married Megan. He'd watched them, day after day, month after month. If love was real, they had it.

And he wanted it, too. If only he knew how to tell.

He thought about it all the way to Lubbock. He could feel Carol looking at him from time to time, and he knew she wondered why he was so quiet.
